Introduction to this year’s Maiden Camp Director
Hello, hello! My name is Crystal, and I am going to be the Maiden Camp Program Director this year. I’m a former Girl Scout and middle school teacher, and I am currently a licensed Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA). I have worked with kids in both informal and formal settings for over a decade, and I am a big fan of arts and crafts. I am super excited to meet this year’s maidens, and for us all to have a fun and relaxing weekend in the Texas Hill Country! Please take a look below for a sneak peak at some of the activities I have planned for you and your girls. Other workshops will also be available, and you may volunteer to run a workshop as well!
Childcare Expectations
Please check with the organizer of the maidens’ workshop before leaving your child with the workshop leader. Childcare will not be provided between workshops. Maiden workshop organizers do not change diapers, bottle feed, etc.
Planned Activities and workshops
- Who is Demeter?: A kid-friendly introduction to one of our Goddesses this year, Demeter. We will discuss how she is a mother goddess of agriculture; how sad, angry, and worried she was when she lost her daughter; how happy she was when she and her daughter reunited; and how her story is retold in the seasonal cycles of the year, every year.
- Wayfinding: A kid-oriented (but all ages welcome) practical workshop designed to teach wildlife awareness, orientation, and what to do if you get lost.
- Maiden Song Circle: Let’s sing together! Maidens will learn and sing a mix of traditional Girl Scout/camping songs and Goddess songs, including but not limited to: The Princess Pat, Down By The Bay, We All Come From The Goddess, I Walk With The Goddess, and more! Each Maiden participant (up to 10 total) will receive a song booklet to take home.
- Intergenerational Friendships and Fest Herstory: All ages welcome. We will braid yarn to make friendship bracelets while we talk. Come share and listen to stories about Festival of the Goddess through the years – what has changed, what has stayed the same, and some of our favorite memories.
- Drawn into Nature: A kid-oriented (but all ages welcome) arts and crafts workshop designed to engage kids in observing nature. We’ll do leaf-rubbing with crayons, draw some of the bugs we see around us, and maybe even look up at the shapes in the clouds (weather permitting).
